About Our Centre

RPCOS Building at AIIMS Delhi

The Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences (RPCOS) is a national leader in ophthalmology, established in 1967 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Named after the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, our centre is committed to providing world-class eye care, conducting cutting-edge research, and training the next generation of ophthalmologists.

We are a tertiary care referral centre handling complex eye diseases from across India and neighboring countries. Our facility spans over 50,000 square feet with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical equipment. We believe in a patient-centric approach, integrating clinical services with education and research to advance the field of ophthalmology.

Our mission is to eliminate preventable blindness through comprehensive eye care services, community outreach programs, and innovative research. We collaborate with international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) to address global eye health challenges.

RPCOS is at the forefront of ophthalmic research, contributing to global knowledge and improving clinical outcomes.

Our research division includes laboratories for molecular biology, ocular immunology, and visual neuroscience. We have ongoing projects funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and international grants.

Key Research Areas:
  • Genetics of Eye Diseases: Identifying genes responsible for glaucoma, retinal dystrophies, and congenital cataracts in Indian populations.
  • Stem Cell Therapy: Developing stem cell-based treatments for corneal and retinal regeneration.
  • Teleophthalmology: Implementing AI-driven screening for diabetic retinopathy in rural areas via mobile units.
  • Drug Delivery Systems: Designing sustained-release implants for age-related macular degeneration.
  • Epidemiology: Conducting population-based studies like the Delhi Eye Study to assess prevalence of blindness.

We publish extensively in journals like Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology. Our annual research symposium attracts participants worldwide.
